Ross Pepper for Louth and Horncastle

Parliamentary Candidate for the Louth and Horncastle constituency

Ross Pepper Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Louth and Horncastle

Lib Dems announce parliamentary candidate for Louth & Horncastle

Louth and Horncastle Liberal Democrats are proud to announce that Ross Pepper will contest the parliamentary seat in the forthcoming general election.

The result of the party’s selection was revealed on Tuesday 31/10 to party members during the Annual General Meeting which took place at Horncastle’s Stanhope Hall.

Ross, a lifelong resident of the county, is currently working as a marketing assistant for a Lincoln-based marketing agency. He fought the Louth and Horncastle constituency back in 2019, where he succeeded in doubling the Lib Dem vote share.

He had previously stood in the Lincoln constituency in 2015 before contesting the Sleaford and North Hykeham seat in the 2016 by-election where he finished ahead of the Labour Party. He contested the same seat again six months later in the 2017 snap general election.

Upon being selected as the candidate, Ross expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I am thrilled to be the Liberal Democrats’ choice for Louth and Horncastle.

“The people of Louth and Horncastle have been taken for granted by the current Conservative government for far too long. Whether it is on the NHS, local transport, housing, dumping sewage in our waterways and flooding, this shambles of a government is failing us.

“It’s time for change and I am absolutely up to the challenge of delivering it.”

Louth and Horncastle Executive Committee

Andrew Lashbrooke-Small, Chair of the Local Party, echoed the sentiment following the announcement, saying, “Ross will be a formidable opponent for the Conservatives at the next General Election and an energetic champion for our constituency.

“Over the last couple of years, we have seen areas that are similar to Louth and Horncastle such as North Shropshire, Tiverton and Honiton, and Somerton and Frome turning their backs on the Conservatives and vote in a Lib Dem MP due to their hard work and dedication. The residents of Louth and Horncastle can also have a hardworking, champion, listening to their concerns and representing them in Parliament.”

Local councillor and former parliamentary candidate, Cllr Fiona Martin, also welcomed the selection saying, “Ross is a strong local campaigner who addresses the issues that genuinely matter to residents.

“With Ross, we’ll have a powerful voice in Westminster and a genuine champion for the people of Louth & Horncastle.”

Louth and Horncastle Boundary changes

Constituency Boundary changes
On 27th June 2023, the final changes to constituency boundaries were submitted to the UK parliament by the Boundary Commission for England.  Louth and Horncastle has some minor changes, unlike some of our neighbouring constituencies.

The number of constituencies in the East Midlands will increase from 46 to 47 and, by law, every constituency must contain between 69,724 and 77,062 Parliamentary electors (as at 2 March 2020).

Louth and Horncastle has been adjusted to have 75,959 electors.

We retain our name, and gain a few hundred voters from Boston and Skegness into Halton Holegate, and a few thousand votes from Gainsborough into Wragby.

However the constituency loses Chapel St Leonards, and Willoughby with Sloothby, to Boston and Skegness.

More information is available at the Boundary Commission for England website.

Louth Politometer

Today the Louth and Horncastle Liberal Democrats, together with colleagues from the East Lindsey Green Party, and Make Votes Matter (https://www.makevotesmatter.org.uk/), were out in Louth town centre running a pop-up survey on our voting system, the economy and Brexit.

We had some excellent engagement with the people of Louth, some interesting conversations, and the results were also quite informative.

It was clear that people wanted to talk about these, and other issues, and get away from the more unpleasant style of politics that have been so prevalent recently.

The pop-up survey (also known as a politometer) results suggested that:

– The majority (81%) of people felt that their vote was important and it mattered

– But also the majority of people (83%) agreed that the UK should have a fairer voting system.

The Liberal Democrats agree with this and we are also calling for Fair Votes (https://www.libdems.org.uk/fairvotes)

– On economic questions, the majority of people (86%) do not trust the UK Government on the environment, the cost of living crisis, the sewage crisis etc.

– And the majority of people do not believe the NHS is safe under this Government (82%).

– On Brexit, only 26% of people felt that it was possible to make a success of Brexit. Most people either answered “Don’t Know” (27%) or “No” (47%).

– And on the question of “Exiting from Brexit”, 39% of people agreed that we should “Exit from Brexit”, but the majority (41%) answered “No” and 20% said “Don’t Know”.

(East Lindsey voted 70.7% in favour of Leave in 2016, so this might suggest a change in support away from Brexit).

We would like to thank the people in Louth who took time out to stop and chat with us today, and completed our survey.

Please let us know what you think.

Official: He misled parliament.

This damning report should be the final nail in the coffin for Boris Johnson’s political career.

The Conservatives are so mired in sleaze and chaos that they are totally failing to tackle the problems facing the country, from the NHS crisis to the cost of living.

Let’s Make Votes Fair

Our current voting system allows huge swathes of the country to be ignored and silenced.

We’re fighting for proportional representation – making seats won match votes cast.

Let’s make sure everyone’s voice count.

We’re listening: a better NHS

Patients are suffering from years of neglect under the Conservatives, who have repeatedly broken their promise to recruit more GPs.

We will give people a fair deal, and guarantee people a right to a GP appointment within one week.

We’re listening.

Tory Economic Chaos

The Conservatives’ refusal to properly tax the eye-watering profits of oil and gas companies is an insult to all those struggling with their bills.

Even Shell’s CEO has admitted they should be taxed more.

People should not have to pick up the bill for this Tory economic chaos.
